The Cannock Resource Centre on Walsall Road in Bridgtown provides short term care for children with disabilities

It's also the base for the children's centre, which provides play and stay, health advice, family support and information. Facilities include themed bedrooms which include a pirate room, butterfly room and space room.

Sue Merriman's son James Wilson from Gnosall was one of the first to use the centre. The 14-year-old has severe autism and learning difficulties.

Sue said: "It really is a fantastic place, it's well planned, well resourced and well designed - I really can't fault it. So far James has had two overnight stays at the centre which he has absolutely loved.

She added: "He's also been to Devon with the centre for five nights which was fantastic for him because it means he is doing things that other 14-year-old are doing and it's helping him to become independent. The centre also enables him to socialise with his peer group which is great. I really would encourage people to go and see exactly what the centre has to offer."

Staffordshire County Council Leader County Councillor John Taylor, who opened the unit, said: "Cannock Resource Centre is a great example of many services working together under one roof.  It will be the home from home to young people who will be staying overnight, and will reach many more families with support and information through the children's centre. I am very proud that we have managed to combine state of the art facilities with a very friendly and homely environment."
