Population
There is a wide range of population data available from central government, private companies and local government. The most complete source of population information is the census.
Undertaken once every ten years the census provides a comprehensive picture of the entire population and is unique because it covers everyone at the same time and asks the same core questions everywhere, making it easy to compare different parts of the country. The results from the last Census in 2001 have been included on this website.
Many of the other sources of population information come from the Office for National Statistics including population estimates and projections, migration, births and deaths data.
Population data provides vital statistical information that guides policy and the funding of public services, including education, health and transport. It is also an important resource for business, education and research.
