GIS in Research

Geographical Information Systems underpin the work of many of the Authority's Directorates enabling complex analysis of large datasets such as the National Census data. Its use in Development Services extends from Land Charges searches to Environmental Planning and for Accident Investigation to Highway Asset Management collection including highway defects. The Children and Lifelong Learning Directorate use specialist software to determine school catchments and shortest routes to school amongst other things. The County's property asset is also recorded geographically and the systems employed enable the various datasets to be interrogated separately or together to aid in efficient and cost effective decision making.
The Authority also holds several sets of aerial photography covering the period 1960 to 2000 with some earlier images being available at the Central Records Offices.
Please note that the issue of maps and aerial photography is subject to copyright restrictions.
