Local Economy

Image of managed workspacesThe economy of Staffordshire is always changing and new opprtunities and issues are raised daily.

The County has undergone significant changes over recent decades, most notably in the decline of the manufacturing sector, although this sector is still important localy representing a high proportion of local employment.

The future success of Staffordshire's economy will depend on the ability to maximise the potential of new technologies, the development of a "knowledge economy" and the willingness to adapt to new practices. The future development of the economy will also need to take account of the challenges posed by an ageing labour force into the future.

Staffordshire Economic Bulletin
The impacts of the global economic recession are being felt at all levels. Locally in Staffordshire the recession is having differing impacts on the range of communities and economic sectors locally. A large proportion of employment in sectors which have been identified as being among the most vulnerable in a recession (Manufacturing and Construction) has been one factor in Staffordshire experiencing very high increases in rates of claimant unemployment.

As a response to the need for up to date information on the local economy, the Research Unit is publishing a monthly economic bulletin, considering issues such as unemployment, national economic conditions and indicators, local job gains and losses and the state of the housing market.

The bulletins will be produced on a monthly basis shortly after the publication of claimant unemployment data, to support the need for a timely evidence base during the recession.
