Do councillors get paid?

All county councillors receive a basic allowance which is reviewed every year.  The basic allowance paid in this financial year (from 1 April 2008) is £8,933.

In addition to this all county councillors are entitled to claim for travelling to and from meetings and also for meals if they are away from home at certain times during the day.  You can read more about allowances paid to councillors in the Members Allowances Scheme.

Some county councillors have positions of special responsibility and received an allowance for this.  Examples of positions that will receive a Special Responsibility Allowance are:- the Leader of the Council, Cabinet Members, Committee/Panel Chairman.  You can read more about these special allowances in the Members Allowances Scheme.
