Commendation - Sustainability Award 2009
The award, which marked out the OC3 project as 'Commended', was won in the Sustainability category of the Government Business Awards. It recognised the tremendous work the OC3 partnership has done to cut carbon emissions in Staffordshire.

Winner - Utilities Group Partnership Award
The UK's top organisation in the world of highway works has recognised Staffordshire County Council for its cutting edge work in delivering partnership roadworks schemes which bring real benefits to local communities.
The National Joint Utility Group awarded their top annual partnership award to Staffordshire Highway's Kinver's summer long, high-profile, revitalisation project, which involved organisation of a number of different agencies to make road and utility improvements with the minimum of inconvenience to the public.
It was one of the most complex multi-agency service upgrades ever undertaken in the UK.

Winner - Corporate Governance Award
The county council's outstanding money and business management has earned a coveted national award.
The expert panel of judges were impressed by the way Staffordshire County Council's new leadership team has transformed the authority's spending while continuing to improve services. This has resulted in savings to the taxpayer of £22 million in the last financial year without affecting the commitment to making life better for people in the county.

Winner - Recycling Officer of the Year
An officer at Staffordshire County Council has won a top industry award.
Mark Parkinson was crowned Recycling Officer of the Year at the prestigious National Recycling Awards which were held at the International Centre in Telford.
The Recycling and Marketing Manager went head to head against hundreds of colleagues from across the country and was given first prize over three other short-listed candidates.

Winner - Road Users
Category 2008 - Roadsafe
Staffordshire County Council's Road Safety team have won this international award that recognises outstanding achievement and innovation.
The team received the award for the 'black box' - a high tech system that can be fitted to young drivers' cars to monitor how they drive and feeds into a computer record back home. By looking at their driving patterns with their families and road safety trainers, young drivers can learn about how to improve and develop their driving skills.
The black box is an integral part of Staffordshire's Young Driver Coaching Programme and results from the pilot programme indicate a massive improvement in participant's driving.

Winner of Double Gold - 2008
Staffordshire County Council's Highways team has been officially recognised as one of the country's most thoughtful road builders.
The Staffordshire team has struck double-gold in the National Considerate Constructors of the Decade Awards, recognising their commitment to delivering highway improvements working with and for local communities.
Only one per cent of construction projects receive a single gold award - achieving two is thought to be unprecedented.

Winner -MJ Awards 2008
Staffordshire County Council and its partners have been recognised as delivering the best Children's Services in the county by the Local Government Assocation.
The creation of Community and Learning Partnerships have lead to multi-agency teams providing education, health and safety services in schools, children's centres and other community venues.

Finalist - Partnering with Health Service Achievement of the Year - MJ Awards 2008
Staffordshire County Council and its partners were a finalist in this award for the Stafford Signpost Project. The project has lead to a strong partnership that has lead to more of the community taking a 'prevention is better than cure' approach to their health.

Winner - Innovation category - Local Government Awards 2008
Staffordshire County Council officer Peter Kear won this prestigous award after he developed a 'computer patch' which turns off computers accidentally left on overnight. The technology has saved the county council £40,000 and counting in electricity bills and helps to reduce our carbon production. The technology is now being shared across the country.

Silver Award- Environmental Best Practice and Sustainable Development
Staffordshire Highways won this national award for their dedication to protecting the environment, specifically during the construction of the £25 million Rugeley Bypass.
The authority was given a silver award in recognition of the excellent environmental example it has set within the construction industry.
It used a range of recycled materials when developing the congestion busting, economy boosting bypass. Just over 80% of the materials used were recycled or contained recycled components.
Foammaster - which is made up of 75% recycled materials - was used for the surfacing base. Recycled hardcore was used for all of the temporary haul roads which were removed when the work was completed and the hardcore was recycled again.

Winner - Irene Williamson- Staffordshire Criminal Justice Board Local Justice Award
The award recognised Irene's work on the Driving the Buzz to Death campaign - an initiative designed to show young people the consequences and costs of reckless driving under the influence of drink and drugs.
Irene, from Little Haywood, is dedicated to the challenges of working with young people.

Centre of Excellence status us Local Transport Delivery
Staffordshire County Council were awarded Centre of Excellence status in Local Transport Delivery in 2007 by the Department for Transport for the excellent work undertaken during the first Local Transport Plan (2001-2006).

Winner -Green Champion for Environmental Best Practice - 2008
Staffordshire County Council's IT service won this national award over 500 other nominations for it's continued and industry-setting standard of environmental care, whilst supporting the council's IT needs.
The award was given in recognition of a variety of different environmental initiatives including:
- producing a cost and energy saving computer patch to turn off machines left on overnight.
- producing nearly 1000 eco-computers for use in schools, resulting in lower costs and energy consumption.
- increasing the use of remote technology to fix faulty equipment and for thorough and effective recycling of hardware.

Winner - User Involvement/Children and Families category - Community Care Magazine 2008
The county council and Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service won this national award after touring the county with a roaming diary room, encouraging young people to speak up on what it's like to live in their local community. Local young people had a chance to give Council bosses honest feedback about life in their neighbourhood by giving a one minute low-down to camera.

The county council's Social Care and Health Central Performance Team won this national award for making sure that the quality of services delivered to vulnerable residents receiving social care is uniformly high across the county.

Winner - Quality Champion category - Community Care Magazine 2008
Amanda Terry, one of the county council's Social Care Quality Assurance Assessor has won the award following carrying out an extensive consultation exercise with service users about quality of care and services in residential care establishments. This has led to a revision of service targets and methods of care.

Staffordshire County Council has been shortlisted for a national award for its programme of work to reduce alcohol consumption among 11 to 15 year olds.
