Social Care & Health
The directorate is responsible for a wide range of health, consumer and social care services.
One if its main functions is providing help and support to adults who are vulnerable because of their age, disability, mental or physical health.
We aim to help them live as independently as possible, if that is their wish and it’s in their best interests. We achieve this together with local providers of health services and housing.
People can receive regular visits by staff and, based on their assessed needs, this helps them with a range of tasks that may otherwise be difficult to cope with. Homes can also be fitted with adaptations that will allow people to live alone or with their families.
This includes things like assistive technology and personalised budgets. Assistive technology goes one step further than the more traditional equipment like wheelchairs and bath hoists. It monitors movement and heat in the home using items like fall and room detectors. This feeds back information to a control centre and checks can then be made if it appears that someone has been out of bed for too long during the night, or if the property is too cold.
Personalised budgets give people greater choice and control over how they spend their care budget. It means more flexibility about how vulnerable people live their lives, regardless of their circumstances. This is because we believe that everyone has the right to choose where they wish to live and how they wish to live.
Our social work staff can help families and individuals with a range of difficulties, and we continue to develop our day services to help provide a range of stimulating activities and welcome company for people who may otherwise feel isolated.
The County Council also provides residential homes for people who are not able to live independently and need a higher level of support. Having recognised the growing need for specialist care across Staffordshire, we will provide homes that focus on EMI (Elderly Mentally Infirm) needs. Run by specially trained staff our homes will also provide respite and intermediate care for those who need it.
