Development Services
The directorate is responsible for a diverse range of services.
This includes managing over 3,000 miles of roads in Staffordshire. This covers road maintenance and co-ordinating the work of other services that may involve need to disrupt the road, such as water and gas.
The directorate operates computerised urban traffic control systems that help maintain the flow of traffic in busy towns. Roads signs and road safety programmes are other responsibilities, and around £150 million is being invested in new street lighting.
The directorate is also responsible for maintaining hundreds of road bridges and cycle paths. A dedicated fleet of gritters and snowploughs keep the traffic moving in winter.
Stimulating the growth of Staffordshire's economy is being achieved by redeveloping large sites associated with old industries such as coal mining. This makes them suitable for modern job creation. Sites like Lymedale Park and Kingswood Lakeside are creating thousands on new jobs.
Tourism is another creator of jobs and wealth in Staffordshire, and the directorate promotes a variety of tourism campaigns. Shugborough, the historic home of the Earls of Lichfield and a major tourist attraction in its own right, is managed by Development Services.
The directorate operates 13 household waste recycling sites that encourage people to dispose of materials ranging from garden waste to old engine oil in a way that is as environmentally friendly as possible.
The directorate advises on the management of the county's historic environment, and manages over 2,500 miles of footpaths and bridleways and a range of countryparks. These include Cannock Chase, which is an area Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
