Environment and Assets
Strategic planning is vital to ensure Staffordshire residents enjoy a prosperous future as we build a county in which companies want to invest and residents aspire to a high quality of life.
The county has many physical assets, such as offices, schools and even farms that we have to make work for the people of Staffordshire. That is the principal reason we are replacing most of our outdated building stock in Stafford with Staffordshire Place. It will save the tax payer around £250,000 a year and be a showcase for environmental efficiency, and a landmark to encourage further development in the town. It is a model we must look to emulate across the county wherever possible.
We need a sustainable approach to the environment. What is good for the environment is good for Staffordshire. That is why we are sourcing over £2 million of food for our schools and other establishments from local suppliers - it benefits Staffordshire businesses and cuts out food miles.
We need to improve our use of renewable energy and make sure our energy use is as efficient as possible.
Our county farms are also a great asset and we need to work with them to encourage a local supply chain of food for Staffordshire residents.
My portfolio will also give me responsibility for minerals planning. We need to continue to adopt a balanced approach between the need for minerals and the jobs created in the industry and the environment and quality of life for Staffordshire residents."
