Culture, Communities and Customers
To many people what Staffordshire's diverse culture can offer may come as a surprise.
The county has award winning museums, historic halls and 17 theatres and concert halls. These are the things people tend to think about when we use the word culture, and we have a lot to offer, but part of my role is to show that culture doesn't just mean historic halls and classical music.
Staffordshire's cultural offering is very important as it is directly linked to promoting economic development and job creation.
The county's image is an important factor when we are selling the county as a place to invest and create jobs.
Business owners will ask what Staffordshire has to offer in terms of quality of life when they are considering where to locate a new factory or head office.
Another important aspect of cultural life is our libraries. I am pleased to say that we will be developing these excellent community facilities at a time when we are hearing about cut backs in other areas of the country.
We are looking to extend the use of library buildings, but we are opening up the libraries so that community groups can use them for meetings.
Trading Standards and Animal Health will also form part of my portfolio. Most people understand what Trading Standards does but too few understand that our animal health officers play a vital part in protecting the human food chain.
I will also be building the county council's links with external organisation, particularly in the voluntary sector. I will also be building on much of the good work we are doing with Staffordshire's district councils, police, fire and other public sector bodies.
