The origin of the Standards Committee

The roles and responsibilities of the Standards Committee were introduced by the Local Government Act 2000 and have been expanded by the Local Government and Public Involvement in Health Act 2007.  This latest legislation devolves the receipt and initial assessment of complaints about conduct of councillors from the Standards Board for England to the Standards Committees of local authorities.
