What is Health Scrutiny?

Health Scrutiny regulations came into power on January 1st 2003. The interpretation of Health Scrutiny in Staffordshire has been to review health and health services in a positive way that will lead to an improvement in health and a reduction in health inequalities.

The Staffordshire Health Scrutiny Committee undertake reviews of a strategic nature that affect the population of Staffordshire. Local District and Borough Councils in Staffordshire undertake reviews affecting people in their area.

Staffordshire Health Scrutiny Committee is responsible for scrutinising matters relating to the planning, provision and operation of health services in the Authority's area in accordance with regulations made under the Health and Social Care Act 2001 and is required to make reports and recommendations on such matters. Staffordshire Health Scrutiny Committee has established joint working arrangements with District and Borough Councils in Staffordshire which has resulted in devolving responsibilities to Health Scrutiny to Borough and District Councils in Staffordshire. Membership of the Staffordshire Health Scrutiny Committee includes Members from each of the District and Borough Council's and each has a County Councillor on their Health Scrutiny Panel or equivalent.
