The Chairman of the County Council

The Chairman is the First Citizen of the County and as such takes precedence over all citizens. The only exception to this rule is when Royalty or the Lord Lieutenant visit the District.

The role of the Chairman, is largely ceremonial but he/she also has a constitutional role to play within the political structure of the County Council.  The Chairman is elected by the whole County Council to control the proceedings of council meetings in a fair manner.  To do this the Chairman must remain politically impartial.

The Chairman also has a broader role in terms of engaging with the people of Staffordshire and acts as an ambassador for the County Council.  The Chairman will undertake many informal engagements meeting people during visits to community organisations and events.

During the course of the civic year the Chairman will host dinners, receptions and celebration evenings to show appreciation for service given to the county by representatives of business, faiths, community and volunteering.

The Chairman of Staffordshire County Council is currently Erica Bayliss and the Vice-Chairman is Frank Lewis MBE.
