A piece of cake - the only thing missing at town celebration

It was a real pleasure to be involved in the celebration of the completion of Rugeley's new bypass at the weekend.

Events took place throughout the day, and there was a really smashing atmosphere. The turnout from people in the town was wonderful and everyone really seemed to enjoy themselves.

I had the honour of waving off the participants in a parade of vintage vehicles and of cutting the official celebration cake - unfortunately it was snapped up so quickly I didn't get a slice.

Rugeley has been waiting for its bypass for a long time. It will dramatically cut congestion in the centre of the town and open up land for development. Estimates are that it could lead to 2,000 new jobs, which is a real boost to a town that suffered so much from the end of the mining industry.

The project has been a real success and the completion ahead of schedule is a tribute to county council engineers and our construction partners. They had to overcome a lot of difficulties associated with building the road across a flood plain, but they have managed this on-budget and with the utmost care for the local environment.
