Healthy budget could provide extra front-line funding

Budget monitoring is obviously a high-priority when so many people rely on the services we provide.

On Wednesday I discussed the 2007/8 Fourth Quarter Budget Monitoring report with my cabinet, which shows that we are likely to come in under budget.

This potentially gives us £6 million to be carried over, but there are already proposals in place on where the money should be targeted, including front line service provision and responding to local priorities.

This good news comes off the back of a Government inspection which stated that we're performing well in our use of resources, proving once again that as an authority we're well managed and providing more services for less cash. The Audit Commission gave us a three star rating earlier this year stating that we are 'consistently above minimum requirements - performing well'.

The final report on where we are in terms of the budget at year end will go to the Cabinet meeting next month.
