Stark warning as global warming overwhelms tiny nation
Staffordshire County Council is absolutely committed to fighting climate change.
And the reasons why really hit home at one of our latest events - the launch of our OC3 website and the signing of the Staffordshire Declaration on Climate Change.
The event at Chasewater Innovation Centre was attended by Dr Iftikhar Ayaz OBE, Honorary Consul of Tuvalu.
Tuvalu is a small group of Pacific islands, a home to 12,000 people and one of the smallest nation states on earth. And if sea levels rise at predicted rates it will completely disappear within 50 years! A country's entire population will become climate change refugees.
Dr Ayaz was a guest of the county council's chairman and climate change champion, Terry Dix. He spoke about the effect of climate change on his nation, and praised Staffordshire for taking a stand. As a result of his attendance we are hoping to set up an ongoing partnership with him to highlight climate change on a local and global level.
The launch of the OC3 website is a huge milestone in our fight against climate change. Now everyone can get local information in one place, and contribute their own thoughts to the website. Take a look at www.staffsoc3.org.uk and get involved.
