Panellists put on-the-spot at first Question Time
I was part of the panel for the first Councillor Question Time hosted by Staffordshire County Council.
The event was held at Keele University and hosted by legendary Central TV News anchorman Bob Warman. I was joined on the panel by Ian Parry, member for Stone Rural, Edward Boden, member for Audley and Chesterton and our Chief Executive, Nigel Pursey.
It allowed members of the public to put councillors and senior officers on-the-spot and question us about a variety of subjects - some of which directly related to county council services and some not. There were a variety of hot topics which included recycling, climate change, M6 widening proposals and our youth service.
We had no idea of the questions that would be put to us before the event, but I'd like to think that we fielded everything we were asked in a satisfactory manner. It was also important that we had chance to meet the audience after the event and talk in some greater depth with some of those present. We also had a number of officers on-hand who could help out with specific questions that required expert knowledge of service areas.
I enjoyed the event and think it went very well. We are now using the experience to inform how we develop these events for the future.
