Cycle Maps

Cyclists in Stafford

We have begun a programme to produce cycle maps for each district in Staffordshire.  The aims of the maps are to help cyclists plan their journeys around Staffordshire.  The routes shown on the maps are those that exist at present and also a number of suggested routes along quieter streets.

Copies of the maps are available from tourist information centres and libraries.  Alternatively, you can email carshare@staffordshire.gov.uk or phone 01785 276517

A cyclist must exercise due care and attention at all times, and obey the Highway Code, including all traffic signs and traffic signals.

You CAN cycle on bridleways and byways but you must give way to walkers and horse riders.

You CAN cycle on canal towpaths but a British Waterways Permit is required. It's free, see www.waterscape.com.

You CAN cycle on cycle tracks and bus lanes if the lane signs include a cycle symbol.

You CANNOT cycle on a pavement or a footpath unless there is a right to do so.

You CANNOT cycle on open land without the permission of the landowner

Cycling on canal towpaths

Canal towpaths can provide safe and convenient routes for cyclists.  However, the quality of the surface varies and some routes may be impassable in bad weather.

Before cycling on a towpath you must obtain a cycle permit and check to ensure cycling is allowed on the section you wish to use.  Check with the local waterway office or www.waterscape.com for permits and further information.

Look after your waterways
  • Avoid cycling where your tyres would damage the path or verges (eg when they are wet or soft)

Consider others
  • Give way to others on the towpath and warn them of your approach. Pedestrians have priority. A polite 'hello' and 'thank you' mean a lot.

  • Watch out for anglers' tackle and give them time to move it before you try to pass.

Take care
  • Dismount under low, narrow or blind bridges.

  • Never race one another or perform speed trials.

  • We recommend you obtain third party liability insurance and equip your bike with a bell or hooter.

  • Access paths can be steep and slippery. Join and leave the towpath with care.

  • You must get off and push your cycle beneath low or blind bridges, and where the path is very narrow.

  • We strongly advise against cycling the towpath after dark, but if you have to, use front and rear lights.

  • Thorny hedge trimmings can cause a puncture. We recommend plastic-reinforced tyres or puncture sealant.
