Congestion relief for Burton-upon-Trent

Easing the Union Street jams

Traffic congestion in Union Street, Burton has become a serious problem with jams affecting the rest of the busy town centre, and exhaust fumes from stationary vehicles affecting air quality.

Traffic turning right across Union Street into the Cooper's Square car park causes a serious blockage, leading to frustration, conflict and danger for pedestrians and cyclists.

In February 2005 Staffordshire Highways conducted an experiment to try and cut the costs of congestion in Union Street.

The results were impressive, with major improvements in traffic flows and bus reliability. Now the team is to make the scheme permanent, bringing real benefits for everyone.
