What's happening?

We have submitted a bid to Government for funding to provide the Stafford Western Access Improvements. Our proposals include a brand new road to connect the A518 Newport Road to the A34 Foregate Street and a range of sustainable transport measures.
Our engineers developed four route options which went through a process of public consultation to develop our preferred option. A Major Scheme Business Case was produced and submitted to Government in June 2010.

Latest News
The Government has recently announced that the Stafford Western Access Route will not proceed to the Development Pool of schemes under consideration for funding within the current Comprehensive Spending Review Period (to 2015). However, as our scheme demonstrated high value for money in the context of the Stafford Growth Agenda, the County Council continues to support it, and is currently considering alternative funding opportunities to secure its delivery.
Why is it happening?
Stafford is set to grow significantly over the new few years.
The Government has marked Stafford as a new 'Growth Point' for the West Midlands, with plans for further business investment, employment, retail development and housing. A Strategic Context report describes what's happening, why and the options.
The town is also in line to become a place of significant importance for the military as a garrison town, increasing the town's population.
This growth will bring more jobs and prosperity, and help Stafford become a major centre of commercial, cultural and civic life. This is a vision shared by business and local councils alike.
However it will also generate more traffic on the town's roads. The proposed road would relieve the predicted congestion.
When will it happen?
Once funding has been secured it could take another five years of planning before work gets underway.
How much will it cost?
It is estimated that the preferred option will cost around £38m to deliver.
How to have your say
Although the official consultation period is now closed, we welcome further comments and will take account of these as the project develops.
