Staffordshire's Highways Lab - one of the only specialist labs in the UK providing the expertise that underpins all of Staffordshire's major highways and economic development activities. With over 51 years of accumulated experience the Laboratory delivers on a range of vital services including:

Tests all the materials that are used on Staffordshire's Roads to ensure they are of the highest quality consistently. During every highway job the materials are tested, and core samples are taken once the job is done to ensure it meets the highest standards.

Samples at the Lab are subjected to rigorous testing to determine strength, consistency and durability.

Harnesses sophisticated machinery to test road marking for reflectivity, to ensure that the materials being used on the surface of the roads are of top quality too. This could save lives!

Employs high-tech technology in scanning the road for problems - seeking out cracks and problems before they surface.

Develops new materials - creating new formulas for road materials, blending existing materials and research new ideas to make Staffordshire's roads safer and longer lasting.

Has a national reputation and is leading the way, with government agencies coming to Staffordshire for advice and expertise which is replicated in national guidance.

Test materials for economic development sites across Staffordshire, in partnership with the County Laboratory. Their work ensures that major job creation and housing developments are built safely. The tests ensure the ground is stable and that any ground pollution is detected. Major sites like Kingswood Lakeside and the Stafford Technology Park have relied upon their expertise to get off the ground.
