Mud and spillages

slippery road signMud and Spillages on the Highway

In such a large and diverse County as Staffordshire, it is likely to expect some mud on the highway particularly in rural areas where farming is a major activity.

It is however an offence for anyone to deposit anything on the public highway which may cause a danger or nuisance to road users.

If we consider the mud to be a hazard to highway users we will contact the person responsible and ask for it to be removed.  If not, we may arrange for cleaning to be carried out and recover the costs from the person responsible.

If the amount of mud and speed of traffic require immediate action, and the person responsible fails to take the action to stop the operation the Police will be contacted and asked for assistance.

Road Traffic Accidents, overloaded and damaged vehicles can all lead to spillages on the highway. Where a spillage is of a hazardous nature the local police and the fire and rescue service may also be required to attend.

If you have any information regarding who has deposited or caused the spillage, accidentally or deliberately, please give these details when you are reporting it to help the Council to recover any costs incurred.
