School Travel Plans

In 1986 children (5-16 yrs) made 60% of their school journeys on foot and only 16% by car.

Now almost 1 in 5 car trips in the morning are taking children to school.

Sometimes, there is no acceptable alternative but to travel the journey by car, but many children are being driven short distances to and from school when they could easily walk or cycle.

The Travel to School initiative in 2003 raised the profile of school travel by introducing School Travel Plans.

All schools should now have a School Travel Plan in place, or be working towards one.  Schools had the option to access a grant until March 2009 that enabled them to purchase items to promote sustainable travel.  Cycle storage shelters, parent waiting shelters, entrance gates etc were purchased to assist schools with their campaigns to cut congestion at the school gates.

The School Travel Team can still assist schools with Travel Plans, monitoring and review of existing plans and promotion of sustainable travel choices.
