Road Safety Education
Every year over 150 children die and more than 4500 are seriously injured while walking or cycling to school, many of them close to their homes. Another 60 die and over 1100 are seriously injured travelling in cars.
In 2003, 242 Staffordshire children were injured while out walking or cycling. Another 201 were injured while travelling in cars. A recent Government study has found that: "Child pedestrian accidents in Great Britain are higher than in France and the Netherlands because British children cross busier roads more often and adopt riskier behaviour"
(Local Transport Today, 20 February 2003).
More children are now travelling to school by car, adding to the congestion on the roads at peak times. However the Government is committed to encouraging more children to walk and cycle to school. This will bring health benefits to the children and also reduce pollution and congestion.
