The best way to learn to drive is with a good professional driving instructor backed up with plenty of practice. Choosing the right instructor can be a bit of a lottery. There are hundreds of instructors in the phone directory so how do you make a wise choice?

Ask your family or friends for a recommendation; they may already know of a good instructor

Choose an instructor who has a good reputation and has a car that suits you
The cheapest driving school may not always be a wise investment!
Choose an instructor that adheres to the DSA syllabus for Learner Drivers. This is a sure way of ensuring that you will be trained thoroughly
Choose an instructor with a high Check Test grade. You don't want one lower than 4 with the highest being 6. Ask for proof of their grade!
Make sure you learn with a qualified Approved Driving Instructor, ADI.
Ask to see their certificate on your first lesson

Did you know?

By Law: A qualified ADI must display a green certificate in the tuition vehicle. Ask to see it and make sure it is in date and bears the instructor's photograph. A pink certificate means the instructor is a Trainee.

Once you are learning to drive and happy with your instructor, (don't be afraid to change if you're not), always listen to the advice given especially on the following:

What books to read
How to prepare for your theory test
When you would be safe to practice with family or friends and what to practice
When you will be ready for the driving test
Any additional training after passing your test such as motorway training or Pass Plus
Pre-driver training in schools

All of Staffordshire's High Schools are offered pre-driver training, which covers such subjects as:

Speed and accidents
Attitudes towards safer driving - how attitudes are formed
Recognition of the danger spots, hazards, and how to deal with them safely
Accident investigation - looking at the concept of responsibility and avoidability
