Rights of Way
|
Staffordshire is a beautiful rural county of scenic contrast, stretching from the gritstone hills on the edge of the Peak District National Park, the flood plains of the river Trent, to the edge of the West Midlands conurbation. The area includes the Cannock Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the National Forest, together with the Forest of Mercia, a community forest. We have a network of over 4000 kilometres of public footpaths and bridleways, which offer the single most important means of exploring every corner of the County. |

Whether you wish to explore Staffordshire by foot, cycle or on horseback, we hope that the information contained in these pages will help you and provide you with some ideas about the opportunities available to you. |

There are many opportunities for walking and riding in Staffordshire from long distance recreational routes such as the Staffordshire Way and the Way for the Millennium, the Heart of England Way and the Sabrina Way. There are many shorter, Country Trails and Promoted Routes, several of which are based around County Council Country Parks, Picnic Areas and Greenways. All of these are promoted by the County Council and are waymarked. Continuing from 2004, there is a series of monthly circular walks centred on the Staffordshire Way. This series of walks has been produced with the assistance of the Ramblers Association and a new walk will be published each month. We are continually working, with Parish Councils, voluntary groups and local organisations, through the County Council's Community Paths Initiative to promote and develop such routes for your enjoyment. |

Bracken Spraying
During August 2008, bracken spraying will be taking place on various parts of Cannock Chase. This will involve the temporary closure of certain public rights of way plus other paths and tracks. The map available here shows which of the public rights of way are affected throughout the spraying; the other paths and tracks will be marked with notices on site when the contractors are in the area. For more information about why this work is taking place, please read the following Bracken Control notice
