Welcome to the Transport and Highways section of Staffordshire County Council's website.
By using the links on the left you will be able to find information on the services we provide and useful information for travellers through Staffordshire.
Staffordshire County Council has a demanding job to look after the transport needs of the County.
The County is busy planning and supporting a transport network that serves countryside and town, that links people to work and leisure, and vital services such as hospitals and schools. Industry and jobs depend upon a carefully planned and integrated transport network. Find out about our Local Transport Plan here.
We maintain and are improving the highway network in Staffordshire, with over 2,000 miles of roads and thousands of miles of footpaths directly under our control.
We also build new roads, with major projects such as the Biddulph and Burntwood bypasses recently completed by our Staffordshire Highways team, closely followed by the completion in 2007 of Rugeley Bypass.
But roads are only part of the picture. We are planning for an integrated future in which people have a choice of transport alternatives, helping them play their part in keeping Staffordshire on the move sustainably and safely.
We support the bus and rail network, funding bus services and working with commercial bus operators to ensure communities are connected to vital services wherever they live. We spend over £1 million a year on ensuring everyone has access to public transport. We provide bus stops and shelters and bus information too, and work with rail companies to improve local rail facilities.
We are committed to encouraging more cycling and walking, helping people to get fit and healthy, reduce congestion and pollution and protect the environment.
Road Safety is a key objective and we are committed to reducing the number of people killed and injured on our roads. We do this with engineering measures, enforcing safety in partnership with the police and educating people about safety.
We do not maintain the motorways or trunk roads - this is the job of the National Highways Agency.
