Entry requirements
No prior knowledge or experience is required. Potential learners must be willing to commit to all course sessions and be willing to work towards learning aims and complete a learner journal and work experience.
Course Content
Update your existing skills and gain new confidence and skills that employers value to improve your job prospects. This course supports a practical approach to increasing your chances of securing a job. Learn how to write a curriculum vitae, complete an application online, write a covering letter, complete interview exercises and telephone calls. Learners will explore the job market and roles that appeal to them and complete a one-day work placement (minimum).
Learning materials
Come dressed appropriately for indoor and outdoor activities, including a coat. All course materials will be provided, including laptops and iPads for job searching and creating supporting letters of application. You will also complete a learner journal to record progress, reflect on skills learned, and set goals for your next steps toward work or volunteering.
Learning methods
You will learn through a mix of practical and classroom-based activities, including workshops, group discussions, guided job search exercises, and using laptops and iPads to develop CVs, cover letters, and job applications. Tutors provide demonstrations, one-to-one support, and feedback to help you build confidence, develop skills, and prepare for employment or volunteering. You will partake in work experience too.
Learning support
Learners will receive full support throughout the course from experienced tutors. One-to-one guidance is available to help with tasks such as CV writing, job applications, and developing employability skills. Tutors provide encouragement, support learners to find the answers to questions, and offer practical advice during workshops and computer-based activities. Support is tailored to individual needs, ensuring every learner can participate confidently and make progress toward their goals.
Course Assessments
Learners will be assessed through a combination of practical tasks, work experience, and classroom activities. Assessment methods include observation, completion of job-related tasks, participation in workshops, and tutor feedback. Learners will also reflect on their progress and achievements, demonstrating skills gained in CV writing, job applications, and practical work experience to prepare for employment or volunteering.
What can learners do next/progress onto?
Learners can progress onto further learning opportunities with UMRA, including an English course to develop writing skills, which are essential for employment, volunteering, and everyday communication. Learners may also be supported to access the Staffordshire Brokerage Service, linking them to the Open Door or Connect to Work programmes to explore work experience, training, and employment opportunities.
