Entry requirements
No prior knowledge or experience is required. An interest in gardening and/or nature is helpful. Learners should be willing to attend all sessions, work towards the course learning aims, and complete a learner journal to reflect on their progress.
Course Content
This course teaches practical gardening skills including sowing seeds, planting, propagating, plant care and basic garden maintenance. You will learn how to grow vegetables, support wildlife in the garden and manage pests naturally. The course also includes flower arranging, healthy eating and simple cooking using fresh ingredients. Sessions are hands-on and supportive, helping you build confidence while developing new skills.
Learning materials
All materials will be provided, including seeds, gardening tools and soil. However, if you have your own gardening gloves, boots or tools that you prefer to use, you are welcome to bring them. Our site includes polytunnels with seating and raised beds at different heights, making gardening accessible and comfortable for everyone, while offering a fun, practical learning experience.
Learning methods
You will learn through a mix of hands-on gardening, sowing seeds, propagating, plant care, and wildlife gardening, alongside classroom-based learning covering healthy eating, cooking, flower arranging, and conservation topics. Sessions include demonstrations, discussions, and practical activities to build confidence and skills in a supportive environment.

Course Assessments
You will be assessed through practical activities that demonstrate your learning and progress. Assessment methods include quizzes, discussion groups, Question and Answer, tutor feedback, observation, and completion of tasks. At the end of the course, you will reflect on your achievements and complete a final quiz and receive a certificate of achievement.
What can learners do next/progress onto?
Learners can progress onto further learning opportunities with UMRA, including animal-based activities, crafting, volunteering preparation, and creative writing and journalling. These pathways allow learners to build on their skills and explore new courses in a supportive environment.
