Introduction to Construction Groundworks

A beginner course for adults aged 19 and over who want to work in construction. Learners pick up basic groundworks skills, learn how to work safely, and get plant training. Learning takes place in a mix of lessons and hands‑on work at real sites across Staffordshire.

This course is for adults who want to learn the basic skills needed to work in construction and groundworks. It gives people a chance to build confidence, learn practical skills and understand how jobs are done on site.

It is suitable for beginners and for those already working in construction. The course focuses on working safely and doing tasks properly on real construction sites.

Who is this course aimed at?

  • Adults aged 19+
  • Employed construction operatives, groundworkers or new civil engineering staff
  • Individuals seeking to strengthen core technical knowledge and progress to Level 2
  • Learners who can apply learning in a live construction environment

Entry requirements

  • Aged 19 or over
  • Employed in a construction or civil engineering environment
  • Right to work in the UK
  • No formal qualifications required, but employer endorsement and role suitability are essential

Course content

Learners will develop essential site skills and knowledge to support progression within construction and groundworks, including:

  • Core groundworks skills
  • Health and safety awareness
  • Mandatory plant training options (NPORS), such as:
    • Forward Tipping Dumper
    • Ride‑on Roller
    • Plant Marshalling
  • Employability skills and behavioural readiness for site work

Learning methods

Delivery is blended, combining:

  • Online learning via a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE)
  • Face‑to‑face tutor‑led sessions
  • Practical, on‑site assessment
  • Competency‑based assessment in live working environments

Learning support

Learners receive structured support throughout, including:

  • Induction and initial assessment

  • Regular progress reviews
  • Ongoing tutor, assessor and pastoral support
