Who is the course aimed at?

Designed for employed construction operatives, groundworkers and new civil engineering staff who need to strengthen core technical knowledge, gain plant competency, achieve Level 2 progression and improve safe, productive performance on live sites.

Entry Requirements

Learners must be aged 19+, employed in a construction or civil engineering environment, have the right to work in the UK, and be able to apply learning in a live role. No formal entry qualifications are required, but employer endorsement and role suitability are essential

Course Content

Groundworks Skills Bootcamp provides employed individuals with the technical skills, safety certifications, and behavioural readiness to secure progression within employment in civil engineering and groundworks or securing job roles in the construction sector. The curriculum covers essential site skills as well as undertaking mandatory plant training in Forward Tipping Dumper or Ride on Roller or Plant Marshalling (NPORS).

Learning Materials – What you need to bring

Learners should demonstrate a willingness to learn, develop new skills, and progress into new opportunities within the sector. No prior groundworks knowledge is required. Applicants would typically have some site-based construction experience, ideally as a labourer, and a basic understanding of construction health and safety.

Learning Methods

Learners will be taught through a blended delivery model combining online Virtual Learning Environment, face-to-face teaching and learning, practical on-site assessment, and competency-based assessment. The Virtual Learning Environment  supports flexible theory study and consolidation, while face-to-face sessions focus on tutor-led delivery, demonstrations, and applied civil engineering principles.

Learning Support

Learners will receive structured tutor, assessor, and pastoral support throughout the programme. This includes induction and initial assessment to identify individual starting points, tailored learning plans, regular progress reviews, and ongoing feedback through the Virtual Learning Environment and face-to-face sessions. Tutors and assessors will provide targeted coaching, competency-based guidance, and workplace support to help learners apply knowledge confidently in live civil engineering environments. Additional support will be available for literacy, digital skills, wellbeing, and any reasonable adjustments required to ensure successful completion and progression.

Course Assessments

Assessment will include knowledge checks, practical skills observation, competency-based assessment, workplace evidence, and on-site practical assessment. Learners will demonstrate competence in core groundworks activities such as drainage, concreting, plant operations, and safe working practices. Progress reviews, tutor feedback, and professional discussions will evidence readiness for sustained employment and progression within civil engineering and groundworks roles.

What can learners do next?

The bootcamp will progress learners from entry-level site operative roles into multi-skilled plant and machinery operations within the large-scale groundworks and civil engineering sector.
