Bypass Construction Awarded  Best In The Country by National Considerate Constructors Scheme

Considerate construction earns double gold

Staffordshire Highways has been officially recognised as one of the country's most thoughtful road builders.

The Staffordshire team has struck double-gold in the National Considerate Constructors of the Decade Awards, recognising their commitment to delivering highway improvements working with and for local communities.

Only one per cent of construction projects receive a single gold award - achieving two is thought to be unprecedented.

Staffordshire has had 126 schemes operating under the National Considerate Constructors scheme over the last decade.

Top of the pops was Rugeley Bypass which brought home a double gold in the competition which recognizes the high standards of care and consideration for the needs of the community and the environment shown by construction organisations in delivering projects.

Judges particularly noted the excellent communications programme operated to keep the residents and the general public informed of developments and the high levels of environmental protection. The road is officially "launched" at a celebration event on Saturday September 22.

Staffordshire's cabinet member for transport Councillor John Wakefield said: "The partnership between the County team and their contractors Wrekin and Birse Rail was really delivering for the people of Staffordshire."

"The partnership delivering new ideas, innovation and environmental improvement in the way they do things. It's saving money by improving efficiency. And it's focusing on ensuring they put the local community right at the heart of their operations.

"Revitalising and upgrading the highway network can't be done without causing some temporary inconvenience, but the team do everything they can to work with the community to meet their needs throughout."

Building roads isn't the only Staffordshire County Council service that has earned praise from the Considerate Constructors scheme. The council's Children and Lifelong Learning directorate has also got in on the act with several school building projects getting awards too.

There are now high hopes that the bypass will receive a third gold. The Birse Civils are expected to score highly for their work to finalise the £25 million project, that is expected to open three months ahead of schedule.
