Spy Dog - one of the stars of Words and Wonders

Shugborough story-tellers spark the imagination

Staffordshire Library members can benefit from half price entry to the Words and Wonders event at Shugborough on Sunday October 5.

As the launch event for Staffordshire's Family Learning Month, Words and Wonders promises to be a day packed with family-friendly fun and frolics.

The day long event, which has been organized by Staffordshire Library Service as the result of a successful bid for Art Council funding, aims to spark the imagination and encourage creativity through reading, writing and drawing.

People of all ages and abilities are invited to be ushered through a fantasy world by professional story-tellers, try illustrating children's book characters or sit back and be inspired by our best-selling guest authors, Lindsey Davis and Mary Cutler.

Highlights of the day include chances to:

  • Get up close and personal with best-selling author, Lindsey Davis and her friend Mary Cutler, long-time script writer for BBC Radio 4's The Archers
  • Learn how to be brilliant in an inspirational self-improvement workshop with Andy Cope
  • Be entertained by Indian Story-teller, Peter Chand
  • Be creative with children's book illustrator and author, Steve Smallman
  • Meet Lara, the undercover doggy-detective and central character in Andy Cope's children's book series, Spy Dog
  • Meet a 1903 Suffragist and a Flapper from the late 1920's as the ladies from The History Wardrobe bring this exciting period of women's history to life
  • Celebrate Kippers' 18th Birthday with a variety of activities and stories for the under 5's based on the lovable children's book character

County Councillor Maureen Compton, Cabinet Support Member for Cultural Services said: "It is important that families in Staffordshire have the opportunity to learn together in a friendly and fun environment.  Words and Wonders at Shugborough is an event that is being held as part of family learning month and it promises to be a fantastic day."

Everyone is welcome and half price entry is offered to anyone who is a member of a library in Staffordshire - a valid Staffordshire Library card will need to be shown at the Shugborough ticket desk.

Anyone who is not yet a member of a library in Staffordshire can still get a membership card and benefit from half price entry by joining before the event.

Simply go to a local library or join online at www.staffordshire.gov.uk/libraries. It's free!
