Give reading a sporting chance this summer
Libraries across Staffordshire are inviting young people to keep up the reading habit this summer by registering for the free Summer Reading Challenge.
Children aged between 4-12 years old will want to go to and put their names down for the challenge when registration starts on Saturday 12 July.
This year, the challenge has a sporting theme and youngsters will need to read their way through any six library books before Saturday 13 September to get a shiny Team Read gold medal.
Team Read team mates can also expect a host of great gifts throughout the challenge to encourage them to reach the finish line.
On joining, youngsters will get an amazing moving image membership card, a fold-out Team Read Stadium poster to chart their progress and a voucher for a free day at Alton Towers or Drayton Manor Park.
On returning their first two books, kids will receive a bronze sticker sheet and vouchers for the National Forest Maize Maze, Sea Life Centre and Snow Dome.
Another two books later, they will get a silver sticker sheet and a voucher for Waterworld.
Finally, on returning their fifth and sixth books, completers will proudly receive their Team Read gold medal, certificate, gold sticker sheet, another voucher for a local attraction and a Sport Across Staffordshire bookmark.
County Councillor and Cabinet Support Member for Cultural Services, Maureen Compton, said: "Despite competition from modern technologies, children love to read and be read to. Over 10,000 young people took part in the Summer Reading Challenge last year and I am hopeful that we can beat that number this year."
If your children have not yet registered for the Summer Reading Challenge, pop down to your local library and sign them up for free.
