Seb inspires Olympic hopefuls to set a gold standard

Sebastian Coe met future Olympians when he visited Stafford Sports College.

Coe, the double gold winning Olympic medallist, is Chair of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG).

The school is a specialist sports college for 11 - 18 year olds and the base for the Stafford and Stone School Sport Partnership.  Among the schools in the Partnership there are a number of students who are considered to be potential future Olympians and Paralympians.

Seb met Councillor Chris Saint, Chair of the West Midlands Leadership Group for 2012, before being introduced to Head Teacher, Dr Rowena Blencowe, who led a tour of the college's sporting facilities.

He also met Staffordshire Young Ambassadors for 2012, Ali Browning and Peter Cox, and presented certificates to the winners of a recent replica Olympic event at the college where students from the Partnerships cluster primary schools represented different countries to compete in a number of sports.

He said: "It is immensely rewarding to visit some of rthe egion's schools, colleges, projects and programmes that will contribute directly to the success of the 2012 Games. The creativity, dedication, talent and commitment on display confirms the region's progress in securing the best the 2012 Games has to offer.

Maureen Compton, the county council's Cabinet Support Member for Cultural Services who is a representative for Staffordshire on the West Midlands Group for the 2012 Games said: "We were delighted to welcome Lord Coe to Staffordshire.  His visit provided an inspiration for all young people in the county who aspire to do well in their chosen sport.  Stafford Sports College is one of ten specialist sports colleges across Staffordshire who are providing specialist sports education to 11 - 18 year olds. We hope to see our potential future Olympians and Paralympians do well in their field and look forward to seeing them compete in London in 2012."
