Key Stage 2 success for Staffordshire pupils

Staffordshire school pupils have a good reason to celebrate success after once again achieving higher than average Key Stage 2 results.

The Department for Children, Schools and Families has released figures for the 2009 Key Stage 2 attainment tests, typically taken by school pupils in year 6.

In English and maths, the percentage of pupils gaining the benchmark attainment of level 4 or above is higher than the national average. Indeed, at the higher attainment level of level 5, pupils in the county have also done well.

Cabinet Member for Children and Young People Ian Parry said: "Staffordshire schools always gain good results in Key Stage 2 tests, and I am pleased to see that this year is no different.

"Staffordshire pupils have done particularly well in English and maths combined, with 73 per cent of pupils achieving the benchmark of level 4 or above, slightly above the national average by 1 per cent.

"We have also done well at level 5 achievement, with 35 per cent of pupils gaining a level 5 in maths, an improvement of 3 per cent on last year, and 28 percent achieving a level 5 in English.  These results are due to the hard work of pupils, teaching staff and governors.

"While I am aware of the issues surrounding league tables and whether they are an accurate representation of a school's performance, I would like to thank all our schools and pupils for their hard work and we will continue to support them in striving to raise achievement and attainment across all ages."
