Shugborough's Red Room
Shugborough's Red Room

Red Room throws open its doors for first time

For the first time ever visitors will be able to wander around Shugborough's grandest state room.

During 2009 the enormous Red Drawing Room will be completely opened up to the public allowing them to view priceless artefacts at unprecedented close quarters.

Previously visitors have only been able to glimpse inside the breath-taking room from just inside the doorway.

Group Manager Liz Carruthers said: "This room is probably our most breath-taking and its cut glass chandelier is one of the most remarkable in the country.

"The estate has never been able to allow people to walk around the room before due to a delicate tapestry which served as a floor covering. But the tapestry - which was on long-term loan from Aubusson Abbey - has now been returned, allowing Shugborough visitors full access to the splendid interior.

The room as we see it today was used as a withdrawing room where guests would retire after dinner in the State Dining Room.

"The furniture is original and the sofas cost £296 two hundred years ago! They even came with special stockings for the legs to protect them from over-zealous housemaids."

"There are also a number of stunning artefacts and paintings. One of these is an eye-catching Louis XVI clock with an absolutely striking movement - something visitors have never ever been able to get close to before."

In addition the room offers outstanding views over the Grade One listed formal gardens.

Shugborough, near Stafford, re-opens daily to the public on March 20.

The opening of the Red Drawing Room is just one of a series of new and exciting activities at the estate. A new Patrick Lichfield Exhibition of a calibre rarely seen outside London is set to open next month and staff will also be bringing treasured objects from the depths of the estate's stores each month for the public to view.
