Tamworth teacher becomes face of poster campaign

My county council logoA reception-class teacher from Tamworth has become a Staffordshire-wide celebrity.

Nicola Batchelor, from St Gabriel's Catholic Primary School in Belgrave, Tamworth, features on posters in bus-stops and town centres up and down the county. They are part of a county council campaign to tell people what it spends their council tax on.

The year-long campaign aims to tell the public about county council services they use everyday as well as about those that they can take advantage of.  As well as encouraging people to find out more, the first wave of promotion aims to show people how the council is providing more for less.

"I'm absolutely delighted to be part of the campaign," said Nicola.  "I absolutely love working at St. Gabriel's and really making a difference to young people's lives.

There's a real family atmosphere at the school that is rare, and that's thanks to the children, who are a joy to work with, and the Headteacher who is extremely supportive.

I came to this school as a child and was delighted that I was able to train here as a student teacher and to get a position.  That was six years ago and I haven't looked back since."

The school itself is going from strength to strength having been judged as a good school with outstanding features, in last year's Ofsted inspection.

Headteacher of the school, Julie Collins, said:  "St. Gabriel's is a great school to work in.  We have fantastic children and staff. Staffordshire is a great place to work and we wish the county council well with this worthwhile campaign."

County Councillor John Taylor, Leader of Staffordshire County Council said: "We're delighted to include St. Gabriel's as part of the My county council campaign.  Staffordshire County Council supports over 400 schools and 123,000 pupils to achieve and this school really works hard for its pupils.

It's all about telling people what we do for them and how we spend their money.  We've been recognised by the Audit Commission as providing value for money - and now we want to tell people why."
