Children from Bhylls Acre School celebrating new funding for playgrounds with Cllr Robert Simpson

Thanks a million for playground fun

Staffordshire's children will be looking forward to more fun at play time, thanks to £1million of government funding.

Staffordshire County Council has been awarded the cash over three years to invest in public playgrounds across the county as part of a major national investment in play.

The funding will be spent on 25 new playgrounds in locations where children and families already use.  Playgrounds will need to be good to look at, as well as fun to use.  The emphasis will be on using natural materials and creating landscaped play areas with facilities for all ages, as well as somewhere parents can relax while their children enjoy themselves.  New playgrounds will need to be accessible for all children with disabilities.

County Councillor Robert Simpson is cabinet lead for children and young people.  He commented:  "High quality outdoor play opportunities are important for children's development and health, so it is very exciting to be awarded this funding.

"The next step is to develop a plan for the whole county, to complement the playgrounds that are there.  We will work with local communities and voluntary groups to decide what facilities would be best in each area."

The funding is not intended to be spent on school sites.
