Youngsters join Olympic handover celebrations

Youngsters across Staffordshire will be joining more than 40,000 people in London to celebrate the handing over of the Olympic flag on August 24.

Members of Staffordshire County Council's Youth Service have been chosen to attend the celebrations, as the county marks the moment when the UK becomes the next official Olympic Games Host Country.  The event will coincide with the closing ceremony in Beijing, where the Olympic flag with be symbolically handed over to the Mayor of London.

The youngsters chosen are all volunteers within Staffordshire Youth Service, and have all taken part in peer mentor training and local youth forums, giving up their spare time to do something positive and make a difference to their local area.  Some are also members of the UK Youth Parliament.

County Councillor Eric Drinkwater, support member for the Youth Service said:  "I think it's excellent that these young people have been chosen to represent Staffordshire at a national event.  They are a credit to the county, giving up their free time to really support other young people in their local area.  I am very proud of all of the young people in our Youth Service; because they fly in the face of the bad press young people get these days."

County Councillor Peter Beresford, cabinet member for children and young people said:  "I'm sure the young people will have a fantastic time in London.  It is a tremendous privilege to be chosen to be part of such a momentous and historic event, and I can't think of any one more deserving than these young people."

To mark the Olympic Handover, there will be a separate Olympic flag raising event at 2.30pm on Sunday August 24, at the Shire Hall Gallery and Guild Hall Shopping Centre in Stafford.
