Who dairies wins - farm scoops schools milk contract

Over one million litres of fresh milk from a Staffordshire farm will be finding its way into Staffordshire schools and other council council establishments.

The county council has shown its support for the local dairy indistry by awarding a three year supply contract to Wells Farm Dairy.

The Bradley farm will now supply milk to nearly 400 schools across Staffordshire, as well as all county council buildings, after successfully bidding for the three-year contract, worth up to £820,000.  The contract equates to 1.1million litres of milk supplied to schools across the county.

Wells Farm Dairy sources milk from local farms around Staffordshire.  Then it is distributed to schools across the county. Twenty-four schools, mainly in the rural north of the county, fall outside the remit of the dairy.  Their milk will be supplied by local farms.

County Councillor Peter Beresford, cabinet member for children and young people, said:  "It's tremendous that the council is supporting local business.  Now we can ensure that the milk supplied in our schools is the every best in local produce.  Not only are we benefiting local business, we are also helping to promote a healthy lifestyle for our youngsters."

Dave Brown, Head of Support Services at Staffordshire County Council said:  "We chose to work with Wells Farm because they were competitively priced, produce a high quality product, and have the right processes in place for delivery.  The fact that they are a local firm, and source their milk locally, will both benefit the local economy and help to reduce our carbon footprint. I'm sure pupils and parents will be pleased that we are sourcing milk from within their communities."
