Kelly has been through the county council's own engineering training scheme

Kelly flies the flag for county's engineering training scheme

A talented civil engineer is celebrating her success after passing her honours degree with flying colours.

Kelly Mullane is the first civil engineer trained from scratch by Staffordshire County Council to be awarded a first class BEng honours degree.

Thanks to her hard work and dedication the 26-year-old has been told that she achieved the highest possible accolade at that level.

Kelly, who works in the structures office of Staffordshire Highways, was put though her paces to achieve the accolade.

She previously took part in a four year training course which was launched by the county council in 2002 and went on to successfully complete a HNC in Civil Engineering at Wolverhampton University.

Kelly, from Stoke-on-Trent, embarked upon a BEng course at Coventry University which involved completing a variety of complex civil engineering modules as well as penning a gruelling 10,000 word dissertation which explored the possibility of re-using waste materials from power stations and incinerators for use in road and bridge construction.

Kelly said she was thrilled that her hard work had paid off.

"I was a bit surprised when I found out my results and really pleased.

"I started at the county council when I was 20 and have loved every minute. The training scheme that I took part in gave me an excellent grounding in civil engineering and has enabled me to get to where I am today. I love problem solving and calculations so civil engineering seemed like the perfect job and I'm happy to say that I have never looked back since I started."

David Wilson, Staffordshire Highways Chief, added: "I am delighted that Kelly has achieved a first class honours degree. Her commitment and dedication to the field has shone and she will no doubt continue to be an asset to her department and the county as a whole."

Councillor John Wakefield, Cabinet Member for Economic Prosperity and Sustainable Communities, said: "We have an excellent team in Staffordshire Highways and Kelly's achievement has demonstrated the kind of skills we have. She has worked incredibly hard to be awarded such a prestigious qualification and I wish her all the best for the future."
