"Driving the Buzz" hits homes with drink and drugs message

Youngsters in Staffordshire will be able to learn one of life's harshest lessons the easy way with the launch of a new game and information pack.

Driving the Buzz to Death is designed to show the consequences and costs of reckless driving under the influence of drink or drugs.

The new interactive resource has been developed by Staffordshire County Council Road Safety, the Youth Offending Service and the School Improvement Division.

Students will look at how the deadly combination of drink, drugs and reckless driving can lead to a range of consequences that can affect them, their friends and family, their future and of course the results of any legal action. To support this resource, two young people have produced a DVD to tell their stories and show how being involved in a road traffic offence has affected their lives.

Staffordshire County Council Cabinet Member with responsibility for Road Safety, Councillor Carol Dean said: "Young people out on the county's road continue to be a real worry to us. They only represent 11 per cent of the population of Staffordshire yet account for 40 per cent of those killed or seriously injured in road traffic crashes.

"We are constantly looking for new ways to get the message across. All too often young people learn the hard way. Driving the Buzz to Death is a fantastic interactive resource that clearly illustrates the consequences of alcohol, drugs and reckless driving on young people's lives. We are also very grateful to those who have told their personal stories on the accompanying DVD. Unfortunately they have learnt the hard way but are willing to tell their stories so others can learn from their mistakes."
