Top developers chosen for prestigious boost to Stafford's heart
The partners have been selected against stiff competition from the biggest and best in the development business to deliver the exciting new mixed use development which is a key part of the county and borough council's town centre regeneration master plan.
Integrating brand new shopping accommodation with business offices and a new county council headquarters, the development will make the natural link between the historic town centre and the proposed Riverside regeneration.
Linked into the Riverside project, the St George's complex and plans for a new town centre multi story car park on North Walls, the Tipping Street development will help ensure Stafford becomes one of the most attractive towns to live, shop and work in the West Midlands.
The Tipping Street development will see the existing drab car park swept away and replaced with landmark buildings which will be architecturally exciting, marrying modern values with a respect for the historical context of the town. The development will also be a model of environmental design - meeting BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environment Assessment Method) standards - just like Staffordshire's award winning Lymedale Business Centre up in Newcastle-Under- Lyme.
Staffordshire County Council Deputy Leader County Councillor Robert Simpson said Modus and Stoford had really impressed with their designs and their commitment to quality.
"Both Modus and Stoford have a track record in creating buildings with a buzz that attract new business, create jobs and transforms the environment for the better.
"The partners really impressed us with their response to our environmental demands. Staffordshire is committed to reducing our climate change impacts.
"The team are developing designs which innovate to save energy. The new building will meet the highest environmental standards. We want to ensure that the development sets the standards for the future. Stafford should be a historic town at the heart of a sustainable and prosperous future and this development will lead the way.
"Stafford is a great place and should be top of the league as a destination for visitors and investors," he said.
Alison Crane of leading local environmental organisation Sustainability Matters said all new buildings should put the environment and energy reduction at the heart of their design.
"It's great that Staffordshire is leading the way in adopting BREEAM standards in this new development. This should be the pattern for all new developments. Energy efficiency is at the heart of future sustainability. Stafford should be a centre of excellence," she said.
Climate change really is the biggest threat to our future prosperity so it is vital that prominent regional centres like Stafford take the lead. If climate change gets a grip wildlife and people will suffer around the globe - and Staffordshire will be no exception.
Staffordshire County Council has already made a landmark commitment to reducing its carbon emissions by 80% by 2050, which we applaud. By adopting new technologies and innovative design in this town centre development it is putting its money where its mouth is.
Modus Development Director, Neal Dale, commented: "Modus are very pleased to be partnering the county council and Stoford on this exciting project. Tipping Street represents an opportunity to create an iconic building for the County of Staffordshire to be proud of and will assist the delivery of the wider regeneration agenda across the town."
Tony Nash, Director of Stoford Developments added: "It is exciting to be working on a building that will achieve BREEAM excellent and an A rated energy performance certificate some of the governments highest awards for sustainable offices. We have been working on developing offices that meet the highest standards of sustainability and the ability to work with the county council who are committed to a genuinely environmentally friendly building will be very satisfying."
