Events help spread Deaf Awareness Week message
Two awareness days promoting services and providing information for people who are deaf or hard of hearing are taking place in May as part of national Deaf Awareness Week.
Events are being held in Stafford on Thursday May 8 and in Kidsgrove on Friday May 9 and a wide range of organisations will be attending to give information and advice. The aim is to raise awareness of the services available to deaf and hard of hearing people of all ages.
The awareness days have been organised by Staffordshire County Council's Social Care and Health district teams and information will be available about managing hearing loss, equipment available, welfare benefits, caring for people with a hearing loss, help for people with tinnitus or who are Deafblind and support for young people and their families.
County Councillor Susan Woodward, Cabinet Member for Older People and Healthier Communities, whose father was hard of hearing is keen to support and promote these events. She said: "We want to encourage as many people as possible to visit Stafford or Kidsgrove - it doesn't matter where you live or your age as there will be information relevant to everyone who is deaf or hard of hearing. Events like this would not only have been of great benefit to my father but also my family. Having access to the sort of information that will be available at these events is invaluable.
"The days will also provide the opportunity to meet with other people who have a hearing loss and share valuable experiences, whilst enjoying some of the free refreshments.
She added: "We are also hoping that these events will provide people with the opportunity to let us know how they would like services to be developed for them in their areas in the future so it's really important to come along and have your say if this affects you."
