Countywide events support Carers Week

Social Care and Health teams are once again gearing up to hold a series of events throughout the county to support the many carers in Staffordshire who look after older, disabled or sick relatives at home.

The County Council is taking part in Carers Week which runs from June 9 to 13.

It is a national event which is organised by 10 leading charities who support the UK's six million carers.  The aims of the week are to highlight and celebrate the contribution made by carers, campaign for better support and services, promote policies and best practices that can improve their quality of life and reach out to 'hidden' carers, ensuring they know where to find help and support.

Each of the eight districts will be holding an event during the week and are inviting anyone who is a carer to come along and find out more about their rights and the benefits and services available to them. There will be a variety of agencies and organisations present at many of the events including the Carers Association, Young Carers and Age Concern.

Information will also be available about finance, respite schemes, diet and exercise, complimentary therapies and at a number of the events carers will be able to get free health checks.

County Councillor Susan Woodward, Cabinet Member for Older People and Healthier Communities said: "These events are really important because they help to raise awareness of the work that carers do and help the carers themselves to find out what's available to them, all under one roof.

"By holding an event in each district, we are making them accessible to as many people as we can and we are urging people to call in at any of the free events to find out more information about how we and other agencies can help and support them.

"Research tells us that carers' own health is twice as likely to suffer as a result of the stresses of caring and it is vital that carers know their rights to ensure that they get the support they need."
