Bolly good show - gallery offers a taste of Indian cinema
Bollywood is providing the inspiration for the forthcoming summer exhibition at the Shire Hall Gallery, Stafford.
From film posters and costume to contemporary printmaking and sculpture, visitors to the popular Staffordshire arts venue are in for a real treat in this vibrant and colourful show.
Iconic images from the National Media Museum in Bradford will be on display alongside contemporary work by Bill Chambers, Andy Jupp and Val Hunt.
Also on show will be Bollywood Stills - an exhibition drawing on the large scale action stills archives from Kamat Foto Flash in Mumbai, India. These images chart the history of stills production from its heyday in the 1970s and 1980s to their transformation into digital photography. This is a partnership project between Punch Records, Shisha, Kranti Media and Manchester University.
Visitors will also be able to view Bollywood Bazaar - an exhibition showcasing the work by contemporary designer/makers who are inspired by the various patters and vibrant colours of South Asia.
On display will be a wonderful array of work which celebrates the richness and diversity of a culture bursting with colour. Work includes ornate aluminium jewellery inspired by Mughal architecture and patterns in Indian textiles by Deepti Kumar, ceramics imprinted with patterns taken from Indian textiles by Pollie and Garry Uttley, prints inspired by sari cloth by Naomi Greaves and mandala based on Indian tradition and belief by Sharlene Poole.
Throughout the exhibition, the gallery will be hosting a series of creative workshops including intaglio print and chine-colle collage with Bill Chambers on Saturday 9th August, shisha mirror embroidery with Ranbir Kaur on Saturday 23rd August and the Gallery's free family event day with Nasreen Rajabali, Zulekha Lokat and Chithra Ramakrishnan on Saturday 26th July.
County Councillor Maureen Compton, Cabinet Support Member for Cultural Services said: "This exhibition is a really colourful show which captures the very essence of Bollywood which I am sure will appeal to visitors of all ages."
