Take to the streets for the Big Lunch

An ambitious scheme to bring neighbours together through street parties is being backed by Staffordshire County Council.

The Big Lunch is the brainchild of the Eden Project. It wants as many people as possible to hold outdoor neighbourhood meals on Sunday July 19 - preferably using food they've grown and prepared themselves.

County Councillor Ben Adams, Cabinet Member for Communities and Culture said: "This is a great initiative and we hope as many people as possible decide to become involved.

"Bringing people together for a street party or outdoor meal is a fantastic way to get to know people you live near but have probably never spoken to. It can have a knock-on effect and get people helping each other and making neighbourhoods much more enjoyable and safe places to live."

People who are planning street parties are asked to contact the county council so road closures can be arranged. They can call Staffordshire Highways Hotline on 0800 23 23 23 or e-mail the Network Management Unit at nmu@staffordhsire.gov.uk

Cllr Adams added: "It is important that these events are organised at grass roots level. There is still time for people to organise events in their area."
