Classic final for young musicians

A group of talented musicians are about to compete in the final of the Staffordshire Young Musician of the Year competition.

The competition is organised by Staffordshire Performing Arts unit, and sponsored by Staffordshire Railway Building Society.

The six musicians, aged between 15 and 18 years, hail from Cannock, Rugeley, Uttoxeter, Leek, Wombourne and Lapley. They were among 30 people who took part in the first round in March and are now busy practising for the Young Musician of the Year final at Christchurch Church, Radford Street, Stone, on Saturday July 8 at 7pm.

The 2006 finalists, with details of their school and their chosen piece for the final, are:          

  • Joe Glover, aged 16  from Uttoxeter who attends  Tomas Alleyne's High, Uttoxeter. Playing the Mozart G Major Flute Concerto                                   
  • Stephanie Bloor, aged  15  of Leek who attends Chetham's School School of Music, Manchester. Playing the Elgar Cello Concerto
  • Emily Henry, aged 18 of Lapley near Wheaton Aston, who attends Blessed William High School, Stafford. Playing the Glazunov Alto Sax Concerto
  • Katyhryn Stubbs, aged 18, of Rugeley, of Walton High School, Stafford. Playing the Mozart D Major Violin Concerto
  • Andrew Smith, aged 17, of Canncok, who attends Shire Oak School, Walsall. Playing the Chaminade Flute Concerto
  • Nicholas Taylor, aged 16 of Wombourne, who attends Wombourne High School. Playing the Weber Clarinet Concerto

Councillor Maureen Compton, Cabinet Support Member for Culture and Heritage, said: "The degree of skill and precision in the candidates for the Staffordshire Young Musician of the Year competition really is thrilling. The time and dedication they have put towards mastering their instrument is clear is admirable and it is great that this competition exists to give them a platform for that."
