Project is transforming town's historic centre

Residents in Uttoxeter have been able to help shape a £1.6 million town centre makeover operation.

Work on the transformation began earlier this month with the Staffordshire Highways team working closely with the local community to ensure the programme is delivered with minimum fuss and the maximum efficiency.

Uttoxeter Plus, East Staffordshire Borough Council and the County Council have all pitched in to fund the Masterplan.

Staffordshire Highways have responded quickly to concerns that some of the ongoing works made it difficult for shoppers with disabilities and people using buggies to get around.

As a result a special "buggy" lane has been constructed to ensure shoppers using mobility aids or visiting with children in push chairs can get to shops and offices.

Market Square is the first area of the town centre to receive the makeover, with a palette of soft coloured stone paving and kerbing set to transform the area.

The programme will roll out through the summer and will be completed by the end of the year. Residents and business are being kept fully informed as each stage kicks in.

Staffordshire County Council's regeneration champion Councillor John Wakefield said: "The long term benefits to the town, local business and the quality of life will be massive, but while works go on we are committed to ensuring that every effort is made to ensure the minimum of disruption and fuss.

"It's difficult to foresee all the problems that can arise in a complex job like this but the team are determined to be flexible and adaptable - meeting local needs while ensuring the job is delivered on time and on budget.

"It's a difficult balancing act. It's only through a close relationship with local business and residents that we can keep things running smoothly. The local community has been really helpful and supportive and we would like to thank people for their ideas and suggestions. It's thanks to their understanding and support that things have gone so well so far."
